Halvo Quarterly

Behind the Journal

Halvo Quarterly is an independent editorial publication based in London, founded on the premise that small, consistent habits — when observed closely over time — reveal more about weight management than any prescriptive programme.

A record of observation, not a list of instructions.

The publication began as a personal project by Oliver Clarke, a London-based wellness writer who had spent years documenting the gap between the weight management advice people receive and the everyday reality of maintaining it. What he found, repeatedly, was that the most durable changes came not from dramatic programmes but from a shift in how people noticed their own patterns: what they ate when they were tired, how much they walked when the day felt manageable, how sleep affected the choices they made the following morning.

Halvo Quarterly was founded to document exactly that kind of noticing. The publication takes a documentary approach: each article follows a period of observation, draws on published behavioural research, and is reviewed by a second editor before it appears in the journal. The result is a body of work that treats weight management as a subject of sustained, curious attention — not as a performance.

The publication is based at 83 Exmouth Market in Clerkenwell, an area of London that has long been associated with independent editorial work. It operates on a quarterly schedule, with three long-form articles per issue. All content is produced in-house.

Editor-in-Chief

Oliver Clarke

Oliver Clarke is a London-based wellness writer and habit coach with a background in behavioural science communication. He has spent the better part of a decade writing about the relationship between daily routines and body weight awareness for independent publications. At Halvo Quarterly, he serves as editor-in-chief, overseeing the editorial calendar, commissioning guest contributors, and writing two of the three quarterly feature articles.

His editorial approach is shaped by an interest in the gap between what behavioural research says and what people actually do on an ordinary Tuesday morning. He lives in north London and maintains a habit journal that he has kept continuously since 2019.

Contributing Writer

Charlotte Evans

Charlotte Evans is a nutrition habit writer based in Bristol, contributing one article per quarter to Halvo Quarterly. Her focus is the practical relationship between food pattern awareness, satiety, and gradual weight management, observed through the lens of everyday cooking and meal planning.

Before joining Halvo Quarterly in 2024, Charlotte contributed to several independent wellness publications, always with an emphasis on evidence-informed observation rather than prescriptive guidance. She brings a grounded, documentary perspective to the nutrition habit space.

Four principles that shape every article

Observation before prescription

Every article begins with a period of documented observation — walking patterns, meal timing, sleep logs — rather than a predetermined conclusion. The writing follows the data, not the other way around.

Evidence-informed editorial

Where published behavioural research is relevant, it is cited and described accurately. We distinguish between what studies suggest and what remains uncertain. No overstatement of findings.

Consistency over intensity

The publication is explicitly not interested in dramatic short-term change narratives. All editorial coverage focuses on gradual, sustainable habit patterns observed across weeks and months.

Two-editor review

Every article published in Halvo Quarterly is reviewed by at least one editor in addition to the author. This ensures factual accuracy, tonal consistency, and adherence to our editorial standards before publication.

“The most durable weight awareness does not come from a fortnight of effort. It comes from the accumulated evidence of a hundred ordinary mornings.”

How an article comes together

01
Observation period
Each article begins with a minimum two-week period of direct observation or habit journalling, depending on the topic. Notes are collected without editorial framing at this stage.
02
Research review
Relevant published behavioural and nutritional research is reviewed, cited where appropriate, and assessed for quality before being incorporated into the article.
03
Editorial draft
The writer produces a first draft combining field observations with research context. Tone, structure, and vocabulary are reviewed against the publication’s editorial standards.
04
Second-editor review
A second editor reviews for factual accuracy, vocabulary compliance, and editorial consistency. The article is published after any necessary revisions are resolved.
